How The Conservatory Became a Sussex County Wedding Venue
Nobody built this place for weddings. The Conservatory went up in 2008 through the creative generosity of Bruce and Bev Gordon, and its original job was housing the Springfest Flower and Garden Show plus the flower exhibits at the New Jersey State Fair. Bev described what she wanted as “simple in a stunning kind of way,” and that is more or less what got built: a 5,000 square foot hall of mahogany and glass with a living roof, FSC-certified wood and argon-filled windows. Couples noticed. It now hosts more than a hundred weddings a year, one at a time.
The Spaces
Ceremony and Cocktail Hour
Four options for vows: the Zen Garden, the gazebo, the rustic Whiskey Garden, or indoors if August decides to open up. Behind the hall sits a paver patio ringed by seven gardens full of greenery and water features, which is where most of the photos happen and where an outdoor cocktail hour usually lands. The attached barn was recently redone and takes cocktail hour when the weather won’t cooperate, half in and half out if you want both. There’s an upgraded bridal suite in there too.
The Reception Hall
Cathedral ceilings, glass on all sides, a permanent dance floor, and a retractable door that opens the room onto the landscape. Seating goes to 250. The propane fire pit on the patio is where half your guests will end up by nine o’clock.
Catering, Timing and Booking
Willow and Sage is the exclusive caterer, running modern American menus with a grazing table and hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour and a four-hour reception after. Richfield Regency handles Kosher and Glatt Kosher. Total event time runs five to six hours. Rental rates move with the season and the day of the week, with May through October the peak and weekday or winter dates the cheaper end. Winter micro weddings carry a lower guest minimum. A day-of package covers setup, breakdown and ceremony coordination.
Not Just Weddings
The same rooms take corporate meetings, workshops, showers, milestone birthdays, fundraisers and bridal expos. The whole operation sits inside the nonprofit Sussex County Farm and Horse Show Association, so the money stays in the county. It shares an address with the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, ten minutes from Branchville and fifteen from Newton. Worth comparing against other Sussex County event venues before you sign.
