Campagna Café Inside an 1837 General Store
The store at 904 County Road 521 opened in 1837. For most of the century that followed it ran as Robbins’ General Store, after Victor Robbins bought the place in 1914 and took over as the town’s postmaster. Old photos from the era show kids pressed up against the penny candy display. Campagna Café & Coffee Roasters has the building now, and so does the post office, which has operated at this address for nearly two hundred years and still does. The name is the Italian word for countryside, picked by a family with Italian-American roots for a hamlet that earns the description. Campagna began as a small-batch roaster supplying fresh coffee to local restaurants back in 2020; the café and farm stop grew out of that.
What They Roast
Arabica only, roasted here in Stillwater. The lineup runs Colombia Organic, a certified Fairtrade and Organic medium roast, plus Brazil Oberon (dark), Tanzania Peaberry, and Costa Rica Tarrazú. Bags start at $12, so you can walk out with beans and a latte in the same trip, and a subscription knocks 10 percent off with free pickup at the store. Wholesale and custom roasting are available for restaurants, offices, and other Sussex County coffee shops.
The Café and the Farm Stop
The café is open Thursday through Saturday, 9am to 3pm, with baked goods in the morning and a lunch menu that regulars keep bringing up in reviews: sandwiches on fresh bread, salads, generous portions. The other half of the operation is the farm stop, a year-round market of produce, meats, and kitchen staples sourced from small local farms and producers rather than a distributor. Buying a bag of coffee, a head of lettuce, and a book of stamps in one stop is a genuinely old-fashioned pleasure, and there aren’t many places left in Sussex County where you can do it. Email ahead for larger groups or special events.
Finding It
Middleville sits on County Route 521 in Stillwater Township, a short drive south of Swartswood State Park and an easy detour on a loop through the western end of the county. It’s a countryside drive to get here from most of North Jersey, which is rather the point.
