The Alpine Haus Story

The white Federal style house at 217 Route 94 went up in 1885 as the Mott homestead, one of the original farms in the Vernon Valley. In 1999 it became Alpine Haus Bed & Breakfast Inn, renovated top to bottom with a private bath added to every guest room and a wide covered porch built across the back, the one with the seasonal view of the valley and Pochuck Mountain. More than twenty five years on, it remains one of just a couple of true B&Bs left in Vernon, and easily the closest bed and breakfast in Vernon NJ to the lifts. The name nods to the alpine resort next door, and the innkeeper runs the place with a hands-on warmth that guests mention in nearly every review.

The Main Inn

Eight guest rooms fill the main house, each decorated differently and furnished with antiques. Every room has its own private bath, cable TV, and free wifi, and the game room with table tennis gives kids something to burn off after a day on the mountain.

The Carriage House

Behind the main house, the converted Carriage House holds two suites, each with a gas fireplace and a Jacuzzi tub. One suite is fully ADA equipped, a rarity among historic inns in this corner of Sussex County.

Breakfast

Mornings mean a four course country breakfast in the dining room, with upside down French toast as the house specialty, backed by homemade muffins and tea breads. Homemade cookies, specialty teas, and a coffee and espresso machine stay stocked in the living room all day, and the porch rockers host afternoon tea when the weather cooperates.

Next Door to Mountain Creek

Location is the trump card here. The ski slopes at Mountain Creek are about a three minute walk from the front door, with the waterpark, ziplines, and the Cabriolet lift all inside half a mile, which is why winter weekends book up fast.

The inn earns its keep the other three seasons too. Section hikes on the Appalachian Trail start minutes away, Wawayanda State Park and a cluster of local wineries are a short drive, and a handful of restaurants sit within walking distance of the porch. The inn stays open year-round, and the innkeeper is a ready source of recommendations for all of it.
