The Lafayette Mill Antiques Center, Floor by Floor

Red barn, white letters, THE MILL, right off Route 15. From the road it reads as one long building. Inside it’s three stories and 23,000 square feet holding 55 independent dealers, which makes this antique store in Lafayette NJ the kind of place you budget two hours for and still leave with a list of things to come back for.

The building was a working grist mill put up in the 1840s, and the owners kept the bones: original floors, beams, the odd angles a mill picks up over a century of use. Dealers set up in room-like settings rather than open booths, each with a clearly marked space and often its own register. That means you can usually talk to the person who actually bought the piece and hear where it came from.

What You’ll Find

Furniture from folk to formal, fine art, lighting, china, jewelry, vintage toys and dolls, advertising signs, sporting memorabilia, old vinyl, antique radios, tin lunch boxes, Christmas collectibles. Merchandise is juried and rotated often, so a March visit and a September visit are genuinely different trips. Longtime specialty shops inside include Bogwater Jim’s, Sweet Peas, and Gray Rabbit, and they’re only part of what’s worth browsing in Lafayette.

Millside Cafe and the Outdoor Vintage Market

Millside Cafe operates on the property, and it’s a real breakfast and lunch spot rather than a vending nook: pancakes, a well-regarded Monte Cristo, espresso drinks, house baked goods. Plenty of people come for the cafe first and drift into the Mill afterward.

On the last Sunday of every month from April through October, the Mill hosts its Outdoor Vintage Market, 10am to 4pm, often built around a theme, with a companion flea market on the Lafayette Park field at 15 Route 15. Those Sundays pull a crowd from well outside Sussex County, so come early if you want to park near the door and leave time for the county’s other antique shops.

Planning Your Visit

The Mill is open Thursday through Sunday plus holiday Mondays, 10am to 5pm, closed New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Parking is free and on site, and the whole building is heated and air conditioned, which makes it one of the better rainy-day and deep-winter stops in northwestern New Jersey. Pair it with a walk at Kittatinny Valley State Park or a loop through The Shoppes at Lafayette just up the road.
