If you’ve spent any Saturday morning in Sparta this summer, you’ve probably noticed the crowd gathering in the west parking lot of the Sparta Health & Wellness Center on Sparta Avenue. That’s the Sparta Farmers Market, and it’s become one of the best reasons to get up early in all of Sussex County. With more than 30 vendors spanning certified organic produce, pasture-raised meats, artisan cheeses, handmade breads, and specialty foods, this is not your average roadside stand setup. It’s a full-on weekly event, and for a lot of us in northwestern New Jersey, it’s become a Saturday ritual.
The market built its foundation on a strong core of local farms. The three founding farmers, Kittatinny Mountain Farm out of Wantage (certified organic produce), Glenmalure Farm and Churutabis Farm both from Branchville (naturally and pasture-raised beef, pork, chicken, lamb, and eggs), set the tone from the start: this is a place that takes real food seriously. Beyond the founding farms, you’ll find Cattail Hollow Farm from Lafayette, Roaming Acres Farm bringing bison and ostrich alongside pork, Bobolink Dairy and Bakehouse with their grass-fed artisan cheeses and wood-fired breads, and Top of the Mountain Farm’s local honey. Rogers Fresh Seafood, Fat Cap mushrooms, and Greenhouse on Greendell’s fresh-cut flower bouquets round out a vendor list that feels genuinely curated rather than just collected.
What makes the Sparta Farmers Market stand out in North Jersey is the range beyond produce. You can grab handmade pasta from That Pasta Club, freshly made guacamole, Greek specialties from Sparta Greek Kitchen, specialty olive oils from Olive Lisa out of Lafayette, and raw kombucha from Boocha Booch. On the artisan side there’s handmade soaps, soy candles, gemstone jewelry, and even refillable household goods from Simple Bare Necessities. Live music plays most weeks, which gives the whole place a relaxed, community-fair energy even on an ordinary Saturday morning in June.
The Sparta Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May through November, at 89 Sparta Avenue in Sparta, NJ. Check spartafarmersmarket.org for the current vendor list, upcoming events, and live music schedule.
