What’s in the Bins at The Vinyl Chapter

Incense burning, something good on the turntable, walls covered floor to ceiling with the kind of stuff you forgot you loved. Adrianna bought the record shop at 221 Spring Street in Newton, directly across from the Newton Theatre, and reopened it as The Vinyl Chapter. The shelves read like a family that has spent decades at concerts rather than a warehouse clearing out inventory.

The used crates go where you’d hope: classic rock, soul, jazz, country, the slow-dig stuff. What catches people off guard is how much current pressing sits right alongside it. Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé, Deftones, Kanye West. All genres are carried, and the smaller sections are actively growing. If what you want isn’t on the shelf, they’ll order it for you. And if you want to hear a used record before you commit, just ask. Adrianna will drop the needle on it while you keep flipping.

Weird NJ, Action Park, and Other Local Artifacts

This is the part that turns a quick stop into forty minutes. Copies of Weird NJ, New Jersey stickers and patches, and t-shirts including an Action Park tee, a nod to the Vernon water park that half of Sussex County survived and the other half still tells stories about. Then there are the Garbage Pail Kids cards and the VHS tapes, which do exactly what they’re supposed to do to anyone who was a kid in the late eighties.

A Music Family, a Music Town

Adrianna grew up with Waterloo Village essentially in her back yard, went to countless shows with her husband and daughters, and landed a shop sitting directly across the road from the Newton Theatre. Two historic music venues, one street. That’s not a bad piece of geography for northwestern New Jersey.

The feel she’s going for is the one from Almost Famous, where the record store is a place you visit friends rather than a place you transact. It works. People walk in and start telling her stories, which is more or less the whole point.

Visiting the Shop

The Vinyl Chapter sits in the heart of downtown Newton on Spring Street, directly across from the Newton Theatre, which makes it an easy stop before a show or a place to kill an hour after one. Plenty of other Newton shops and restaurants are within a short walk, street parking runs right out front, and the shop is currently open Thursday through Sunday.
